Cool Tools – 15th August 08

I love the LifeHacker blog and constantly looking for new tools to make my life easier/quicker/smarter….. I never have time to post about all of them but I thought I’d post a few that I’m interested in having a play with right now! If you’ve played with any of these, do let me know I’d love to hear your opinions (and save me the time of playing with something that is completely useless!!). You know that annoying rectangle thing you get around icons in Windows when you drag and drop, that won’t disappear and just gets on your nerves until you reboot? Focus Rectangle Remover Finding Rin Tin Tin release (catchy title!) is all I need to say! Editra is… Continue reading »

What’s on Your USB Key?

I couldn’t be without my USB key these days if I’m honest, I bought a 2GB one about 12 months before our wedding and it has been my absolute life saver on a number of occasions (and I’ve only left in the office just the once!!!). Up until today I thought the best thing on it was my WOS server (Webserver on a Stick), but looking at Tiny USB Office it might just have some competition on its hands – does anyone use this software? If not, what do you have on your stick? photo credit: bbaunach

Pinnacle Studio 10.5 – Crashes – Blue Screen of Death

I’m trying to edit some video, and on a recommendation I’m having a play with Pinnacle Studio with a view to buying it. I’ve installed the trial version 10.5, but it keeps crashing, I can only do so much before it bombs out with a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death for the uninitiated!). If anyone has any ideas/recommendation/whinges – please shout. I love the interface, but stability is abysmal!! I’ve done some reading, and version 11 seems to be more stable for some people – but can I really warrant £60-£90 on a product that some people rave about and others hate?

Recording shows from BBC Listen Again

I’ve wanted to do this so many time and I know a few other people that have wanted to as well! (I’ll be emailing this to them). So if you’ve ever wanted to download streaming audio and save it to an MP3 player this is how to go about downling an rm file from BBC and then convert real audio to mp3. It uses some free software called Audactiy to download any streaming radio from the internet to your hard drive as a WAV or MP3 file. NOTE: Huge disclaimer – Always read the copyright policies of the content provider, make sure you’re not breaching copyright by downloading their streaming audio streams. Download Audacity. It’s free and available for Mac,… Continue reading »

Creating Excel Spreadsheets on the Fly!

I was shown this yesterday, I’ve always exported stuff to CSV and then re-imported it when I’ve wanted to get an Excel Spreadsheet out of my webserver When you are sending your response content-type back simply return a table with the response type set as: application/vnd.ms-excel You can even return formulas in this way by making one of the table cells similar to: =SUM(F2:F3) (obviously that requires a little more thought and working out where things are going to go in tables.) NOTE: Put a border round your cells or else they’ll all come out blank with just the data in (i.e. gridlines off!)
