Playing with my Orange SPV M700 / HTC Trinity (Part 1 of X)

by Keiron on September 19, 2007

I love my phone, it does everything I want it to, meaning I can run the business, play games and even find where I am when I’m lost with TomTom. I do however have a few annoyances so have gone on the hunt for fixes or software that will help me with those.

TomTom ONE XL Great Britain With UK Mapping & Safety Cameras

The first annoyance is that the phone always vibrates when it sends an SMS. It probably makes a noise as well if you have the sound on (but I don’t normally have sound on), after a quick scan on The XDA-Developers Forum, where Tinity Hacks is suggested, a great little tool with allsorts of little extra’s that saves you going into the registry to play with them!

Backups, I’m on a bit of a backups binge at the minute both at work and at home - PPC PIM Backup
can backup your SMS as well (a failing of most phones now solved!).

MyMobiler, I’ve been looking for something that means I can control my PDA from my desktop for a long while, all the old software I had for my SPV M2000 / HTC BlueAngel wouldn’t work. This didn’t initially - my first thoughts were - here we go again… After a little (read that as a lot!) of digging I found the way to get it working was this:
Start -> Settings -> Connections -> USB to PC, if you have enabled advanced network functionality then untick the box!

I installed SPB Keyboard a while back on a trial - didn’t get on with it as well as I’d hoped and deleted it, but ever since I’ve not been able to set a new keyboard other than the built in ones! I quite liked the look of one of the skinnable ones in this thread - so installed HappyTappingKeyboard and still it didn’t work. So reading through this mile long thread I found out for WM5 I might need IM Selector (also to be found deep in the depths of this thread), this seemed to solve the problem and I can get a different keyboard now! Now I need to find a skin I like!

When I get more time I’ll explore some more apps!

Sweet looking phone! I wish I had found this before I bought an Iphone. Iphone has it’s imitations too, I am hoping that they make some improvements this year to the OS and apps so I don’t have to get rid of it and get something else. My two biggest annoyances: 1. Can’t SSH into a webserver with the Iphone. 2. GPS should be built in. (I hear that is coming however.) It looks like the Orange SPV M700 does both of these form what I can tell. I do love the touch screen part, no keyboard needed.
I have an idea for a post for you, can you do a side by side comparison of the Iphone and and the Orange SPV M700?

Hi,

It’s a fantastic phone, and just recently has proved to be worth it’s weight in gold (not that it weighs very much!!).

One of the interesting comparison I read recently said one of the biggest differences was the fact that a windows based OS can only accept a single touch at a time, where the iPhone can accept multiple clicks simultaneously - probably makes it better for gaming - but not much else!

Don’t have an iPhone so no can do on the comparison - of course you could loan me yours to play with?!!?

I think the iPhone is great if you’re all about music and video. But windows mobile is a much better tool for business and email (in my opinion)

I have the HTC Touch currently. SPB Keyboard is nice but I just don’t prefer it. Have you tried TouchPal? That’s the keyboard I’m using right now and I’m liking it. It’s at cootek.com

Have you seen the previews for windows mobile 7 yet? It looks very promising but last I read it’s not expected until Sept 2009

I had a play with a friend’s HTC Touch at the weekend, nice but I’d miss the GPS functionality on the SPV M700. Why is there never a perfect phone for me?!?!

I agree about the iPhone, I’ll stick to having an iPod and and a phone as two different devices?

Haven’t seen mobile 7, still running 5 on this device obviously!
