Facebook, the new MySpace or a world of it’s own?

I’m really not sure, I’ve heard it touted around for the last few days that Facebook is the new MySpace, personally I quite like both of them but I think both have different approaches – here’s my take on the two of them!

MySpace

MySpace some how seems set in the teen ethic, I was speaking to Glenn the other night and he said “Isn’t MySpace just a CMS for the masses?“, he wasn’t aware of it’s social networking side, and maybe that’s MySpace’s biggest problem – too much control.

If I browse MySpace I do so with my speakers completely off, why? Because once I open my third tab (as a Firefox user I will use the tabs to my advantage) and three different peoples user profiles tunes are hammering out simultaneously I realise:

That I’m definitely still tone deaf, and
why I didn’t consider a career as a DJ.

That’s just it, people can edit their profiles, their music and generally make a complete hash (or visual masterpiece) of their user profile – they can tweak and tinker to their hearts content – some of the profiles I can’t even read because they burn my eyes with their psychadelic colours!

What MySpace does have that isn’t so easy in Facebook is the ability to make new friends, search for someone, read their profile (so long as it isn’t set to private) and learn about them, engage in a chat etc. etc. I’ll come onto how Facebook handles this in a moment, but it really is about making friends on MySpace (and if you’ve got friends already you can add them too!).

Facebook

Facebook has been around a while, but has only recently opened it’s doors completely – personally I really like it. It’s networks and groups have allowed me to get in touch with several old faces within a matter of days! It’s interface is clean and business like, not cluttered and there’s some great technology behind it (particularly the photo tagging!).

I do however, have a couple of grumbles at the minute about it!

I’d like to join my old University’s network – I can’t, simply because I don’t have an email address currently at that University, current students who register and then leave will remain members, but us oldies won’t!
Because of the above point, I’ve setup a group for members of my old department at the University and was asked straight away “is this group in competition with the real one”, it appears there is another group (which I couldn’t see until I was given the direct link to it), this group is only available to members of the University Network (again see point 1, which I can’t join!). I think it will become a haven for us oldies and already those that decided not to continue with engineering!
I can’t see anyone’s profile unless I already know them – now that’s just a PITA, because the photos are so small when you’re searching for someone, often I’m not sure it’s them! If I could see some other detail about them I’d know if it was the person I was looking for!! It also makes it difficult to find people with common interests (unless you meet them via a group). I guess this all does give an element of security, but it seems a little limiting (maybe not so when I consider Mystique‘s take on MySpace and Facebook being good internet stalking grounds – I guess this blog and the business are the easiest ways to find me though!) .

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve ranted a bit about Facebook but I really like it – probably more than MySpace.

They’ve just released Facebook Marketplace as discussed by ProNet Advertising, which tepid brute seems to have had some success with!

Life On Mars – Did you see it?

Unofficial figures suggest that over 7 million people watched the final episode of the series last night. 6.6 million for the first half hour growing to 7.7 after Manchester United’s 7-1 romp over Roma on ITV1.

The climax was still open to interpretation, as to whether Sam is mad, still in a coma or back in time? But that debate can rage on for as long as it takes – it’s all over, at least for Sam Tyler it is!

The show won an Emmy for it’s first series, reports suggest a US version will be made. The second series currently has three nominations for BAFTA’s (including best drama).

A sequel is now planned (let’s just hope it doesn’t turn into a police version of Quantam Leap!), Ashes to Ashes where a female detective will be stuck in 1981 after an accident.

John Simm will not return, but the delightfully politically incorrect DCI Gene Hunt (played by Philip Glenister) will return in the next series.

Top Gear Finished!

Well it is according to Clarkson anyway, if not the BBC!

The announcer after the last episode of the current series said it would back in the Summer, but Clarkson’s newspaper column in The Sun said: “Can I just say, here and now, it won’t be.”

A BBC Spokesman responded by saying “Top Gear will be back. A summer special is planned.” A new series would reach screens in the autumn, he added.

“We’re expecting all three boys to present the programmes.”

But he refused to give any further details or explain the confusion.

Last year’s contest was won by Gary Leon Hill for his impressively titled The People Who Don’t Know They’re Dead: How They Attach Themselves to Unsuspecting Bystanders and What to Do About It.

The winner will be revealed on 13 April, ahead of the London Book Fair.

Broadcasting and YouTube!

Broadcasting is about to change, as more and more people start to use YouTube.

You’ll notice that today, the video (that I posted last week), which showed rednecks chasing the Top Gear team does not work, this is because the BBC have had it removed from YouTube for copyright reasons.

Real people have become celebrities overnight in the YouTube world. Take for example Peter, he is 79 and has 59 videos on YouTube. He has posted a series of videos about his life entitled Telling It All. They were an instant hit!

Or Kate, at the tender age of 18, she has 19 videos on YouTube – with 13,662 subscribers, and 1,617,642 views of her videos. Now that’s popular!

These people are the new stars, they chat to each other via video, they answer back to each of others funny sketches, and generally make a show of themselves. Who can blame them as YouTube are set to offer payment for videos?

Here’s one Kate’s most recent videos as she tries to win a date with a fellow YouTube user, hilarious: Closely followed by the girl she was trying to get a date with making a reply to all the people who entered her competition:

Top Gear run out of Town

This has to rank as one of the funniest moments on a show that is full of funny moments,

The team arrives in Florida for a road trip that will see them travel from Miami to New Orleans. The catch? Each are given $1,000 to buy a whip that will carry them to their destination. Whips in hand, the trio decide to spice up the trip by spray painting inflammatory statements on the sheetmetal. Statements like “I’m bi”, “NASCAR Sucks” and “Hillary for President” are worn like badges of pride, until a stop for gas in a self-described “hick town” turns ugly. Words were said, rocks were thrown, and somebody’s “boys” were called in. The Top Gear crew fled for its life…

Chris Moyles – Supermarket Sweep

As most people who know me will know, I’m quite a big fan of Chris Moyles. He just makes me laugh, I wish I had time to listen to the full show, but it’s invariably in the car on the way to work (watching other drivers around me try not to fall about laughing – you can always tell a fellow Moyles listener!) and then I’m either:

Too Busy
Daren’t listen on headphones for fear of laughing out loud!

This morning was no different, but the fact that Chris and Aled will be on Supermarket Sweep tomorrow just make me laugh… 5.30ish I think they said – must set the Sky+ box? Even if just to find out how much Chris’s Cactus is worth?!!?!?!

Life on Mars is Fantastic series – little odd in places, but I enjoyed the last one and will be watching this series!

The format of the series mixes time travel with police drama, with the central character being modern-day policeman Sam Tyler (played by John Simm), who after being hit by a car in 2006 finds himself back in 1973. There, he is working for Manchester and Salford Police CID under DCI Gene Hunt (played by Philip Glenister). Over the course of the series, Tyler faces various culture clashes, most frequently regarding differences in his seemingly naïve approach to policing compared to that of his colleagues. The series also features a strong ambiguity concerning Tyler’s predicament: it is unclear whether he really has travelled back in time, is in a coma in 2006 and imagining his experiences, or is really from 1973 and mentally unstable.

I’ll admit it, I’m a Moyles fan….. Spending the 20 minutes in the car to work isn’t a chore (unless Chris is on holiday – in which case Radio 1 should ban Chris from all holidays!) when Chris is on. So I’ve just finished his autobiography.. Birthday present thank you very much

If you like the show, you’ll love the book…. It’s random (well as random as the show), jumps about from here to there (a bit like the show) and Chris holds nothing back when talking about his previous guests, I’m guessing if Robbie Williams or
Nicola from Girls Aloud ever speak to him again it will be a miracle!!!!

An excellent read and one I certainly couldn’t put down!!!

So, what’s next? Peter Kay I reckon:
