Printing Multiple Messages in Thunderbird

Recently I tried to print multiple messages in Mozilla Thunderbird 6. Thunderbird would not allow me to select several and click print and then get every messages full contents, instead I got a summary of the emails containing the first two-three lines.

The reason I want to do this is not to waste paper, but to send them to PDFCreator where I can use the combine function and output one large PDF for archiving.

Anyway, back to the problem in hand it just doesn’t work in Thunderbird 6. Fortunately there is a work around:

In thunderbird config editor (Tools | options | advanced | general) , to set mail.operate_on_msgs_in_collapsed_threads = false

When you get there, you will encounter a long list of scary looking attributes for your Thunderbird set up. Press on, dauntless! This is not brain surgery. Scroll down until you find mail.operate_on_msgs_in_collapsed_threads=true, highlight it and click on it. It should look exactly the same but now =false. Now get out of that area and turn off Thunderbird and turn it back on again and your individual messages should print out when you highlight them as a group and you should not get the summary printing out.

All done and fixed (thought I’d post it here for my reference and anybody else’s that encounters this problem!).

Problems Syncing and Adding 2nd Google Account on Android

The last few days I’ve had real problems with my Google accounts on my Android phone! Most of this post will be of no interest to most of my readers – but I hope for some it solves a few problems!

Syncing Contacts

Everything else was syncing fine, Calendar, Gmail… But contacts just sat there with a big red exclamation mark on it. When I tried to do a manual sync it failed with:

“sync is currently experiencing problems and will be back later”

Everything I read said to do a factory reset, something I’m loathed to do unless my phone is practically dead!

So here’s what I did to fix it (I accept no liability for you doing this – you’re on your own!):

Open Contacts
Click Menu
Click Import/Export
Export Contacts to SD
Open Settings->Applications->Manage Applications
Click Menu->Filter->All
Locate “Contacts Storage”
Click “Clear Data”
Do a sync again and what you last synced should come down (remember this could be a couple of months old!
Open Contacts
Click Import/Export
Import from SD Card
Import one vCard file
Select the backup you made earlier.
Go have Coffee, this took a while on my phone!
Sync again, to send all your contacts as they were back up to Google

Adding 2nd Google Account

Again this was becoming a problem, my phone uses my business Google account but I want my personal one on there for things like Google Plus (come say Hi if you’re on Google+). Whenever I tried to add a second account it would let me enter the username and password and tell me it could take upto five minutes:

“Signing in…
Your phone is communicating with Google servers and setting up your
account. This may take up to five minutes.”

.. and then it would eventually timeout with the message:

“Can’t establish a reliable data connection to the server.
This could be a temporary problem or your SIM card may not be provisioned
for data services. If it continues, call Customer Care.”

The most commonly recommended way to resolve this (yet again) was a factory reset, and as I’ve already said – I don’t really want to do that! A little digging lead me to this solution:

Load the YouTube App
Click Menu->”My Account”
Sign in with your Google user name and password.
Now go back to accounts and it should be there!

Posting More Often

I’m going to try to post here a little more often… I know I always say that, but this time I mean it!

What does that mean to you?

Well, other than the fact there should be more to read here, the focus of what’s here will change a little… If I’m going to blog more, it will have to be about what’s going on in my life! This means that my blog posts will pretty much revolve around:

Technology
Web Scripting
Small Business
Baby and Parenthood

There’s not much room in my life for a lot more than the above at the moment you see!

Britain on Smog Alert?

Batten down the hatches people!

It would appear the good people at DEFRA (The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) have declared a smog alert for the Easter weekend.

From 1500 BST Thursday and through the weekend, they urging the public to take “sensible precautions”. These precautions seem to be:

Don’t drive the car for short journeys, with the price of petrol now who does? Use your bike instead!
Avoid exercising outdoors in the afternoon. Correction to above – don’t use your bike in the afternoon

I had visions of regulation gas masks and the like when I first read this on the BBC! The DEFRA site is a little more informative!

Voice Recognition Software – or Not?

I’ve been looking at voice recognition software for the last few days – there’s only really one player out there and that’s Nuance with Dragon Naturally Speaking.

I tried Dragon several years ago and I’ll be honest, hated it. But after Friday when I wrote five paragraphs where my brain was working quicker than my fingers I think I’ve got to give it valid consideration!!

That was until I found out with a product costing over £100 they don’t have a demo/trial version for me to have a play with. They simply say:

“We have invested greatly in Dragon 11. You can buy it at www.dragon.co.uk with a 30 day money back guarantee.”

Fortunately I don’t have a Scottish accent… See video below

On the other hand if you’ve got good or bad things to say about voice recognition software I’d love to hear about it before I spend hard earned cash!!

Commenting Policy – DoFollow – It’s not all about you!

I haven’t posted in a while – I’ve simply been too busy, but I got one comment on my blog today that annoyed me! So I’m here for a rant!

I get a lot of comments on Skillett.com, an awful lot are filtered out without me even seeing them by WP-SpamFree:

WP-SpamFree has blocked 23,910 spam comments!

Things that get past that are still often identified as spam by WordPress and deleted… Then there’s the rest….

More often than not they fall foul of my commenting policy, I created this policy a while back for a couple of reasons – the biggest being that I’m a dofollow blog and I didn’t want my blog full of spam (who would!?).

DoFollow

DoFollow means that if a link is active for more than 24 hours on this site, then we’ll make it a DoFollow for the purposes of SEO rewarding contributors for their work. It’s that simple. Actually there’s a lot more to it, but in it’s simplest form if you contribute here it’s a little thank you!

Commenting Policy

However, the biggest reason I end up removing things is:

Comment Form Guidelines: The comment name field must be filled in with a proper or legitimate sounding name and URL. You may use a nickname or your site/blog name but any comments using keywords, spam or splog-like URLs, or suspicious information in the comment form will be edited or deleted.

And just above the comment field it says:

PLEASE: Take note of the commenting policy, using keywords instead of your name will only result in your comment being deleted or the link removed.
Use your name and actually get a ‘dofollow’ link to your site!

What’s happened?

I think this is all pretty fair as it’s my site and I make the rules If you comment with your website name, I’ll “probably” let it through so long as it’s a website I feel is in context and that your comment is legitimate (believe me there are a lot that aren’t!).

So here’s the comment I get today:

Hello, just to let you know as an SEO guy myself that a link using my real name plus dofollow is of absolutely no value. The only exception is if my name were to be bob smith for instance and my domain name were bobsmith.com – so otherwise there is no value to this linking policy.

I see the authors point a little, that using his real name is of little value to get SEO value for him (other than an inbound link), but he can use his website name. It’s clear he’s just here looking for SEO points rather than interested in the content. Now whilst I am a DoFollow blog, I’m not going to give away SEO points just like that….

Interestingly he did use his website name (but as two separate keywords), which I may have considered as being valid (or edited it to fit), he posted it on a youtube video about cameramen (not in context). If he’d posted it somewhere I was discussing commenting, his comment would be up by now and a DoFollow link in 2 days. Sorry – that’s the way it is…

A Reminder

The commenting field isn’t just there for you to get points for your blog/website!! It’s to engage in worthwhile conversation, if your comment adds to the discussion, provides a different viewpoint or is generally in context I’ll let it through with your name or your website name and a link that is DoFollow… Stuff it with keywords and it’s of no value to me and nothing comes for free in this life, it will be deleted.

Now I’ve got my nice shiny new Android phone, I’ve got it working nicely for business use, but you definitely need some games don’t you?

‘Snow Good At All!

I don’t like the stuff – I make no secret about that… OK I do – but only for photo’s, everything else about it I thoroughly dislike!

We’ve had almost a week of it now and I have some observations…

This country will never, ever, be prepared for this. Even people from countries that are used to digging their cars out of four feet of snow say it’s difficult in this country because we are just SO unprepared.
By law in many countries you have to clear your path and pavement in front of your home and business, doing this would reduce the risk of people slipping on pavements (they don’t grit them, so if you’ve driven to work on wonderfully gritted roads you fall over getting out of your car!).
Weathermen either don’t know how to react when reporting a high of –1, so they either act sarcastic or smug! Neither are appropriate – where’s that “Barbecue Summer” you promised?
Stockpiling helps nobody (except yourselves!) and if it thaws you’ll go out again and it will all go out of date – what a waste of money!
Britain does still have a sense of community and combined whinging seems to get neighbours talking!

Rant over – I’ll leave you with a photo of an igloo I found on my way home the other morning…
